"These novelty books are made from an extant example. This is a small book in which Ladies could place either sewing needles or straight pins in. This book has 8 pages of a pure wool and has hard covers quarter bound in leather and marbled covers. This book even has a ribbon to tie it closed. There is a silver ring on the spine for it to be attached to the Lady's chatelaine."
These lovely reproduction needle books date from ca. 1740-90. They measure 2 3/8" x 3 1/2", and are composed of eight 'pages' of red wool, a black ribbon tie, a red leather spine, and assorted marbleized paper covers - we'll choose.

Peter Goebel loves his copy of Peter Kalm's journal. He'll tell you it has more post-its than pages. Unfortunately, complete translations are very hard to come by today. So we decided to offer what we found interesting - edited and  annotated - to reenactors and history buffs.
Kalm was a Swedish botanist who was sent to British Colonial America by the Swedish Academy of Science to explore and write about the environment. He spent over two years exploring the Colonies and Canada, talking with people and writing down anything that struck his fancy in his journal. While most of his writings concern botany, he wrote pages of information on the everyday lives of people. These extracts, compiled and annotated by Peter Goebel, focus on these people, their ways and customs. It's a fascinating look into Coloinal America.
